Why Does What is Easy for Others Become a Struggle for Me?
Have you ever heard the expression “Life is a struggle”? For some of us, that or similar statements were woven into the fabric of our upbringing. Perhaps you also heard “Nothing worth having comes easy” or “No pain, no gain.” These messages may have shaped how you approach challenges today.
If you were constantly criticized, left unsupported, or had your feelings dismissed as a child, it left a mark. You might have learned that recognition must be fought for, that obstacles are inevitable before joy, and that suffering is the price of love and support.
If this is you, I want you to know something important: this doesn’t have to be your story anymore. The struggle doesn’t define your worth.
Here’s how you can begin to shift this pattern with gentleness and care:
Reframe your inner critic. That voice telling you that you’re not enough? It was once trying to protect you. Thank it for its concern, then kindly let it know you’re safe now. Replace harsh self-judgment with the compassion you’d offer a dear friend who’s trying their best. It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s part of the journey.
Embrace “good enough.” Perfectionism is exhausting. You don’t need to transform your body, earn another credential, or acquire new possessions before allowing yourself to live fully. What if you gave yourself permission to begin exactly as you are? Remember, done is better than perfect.
Honor your boundaries. Your needs and feelings matter. Learning to articulate them clearly—with your partner, parents, neighbours, managers and colleagues—you have the right to respect and personal space. When someone crosses a line, remember that respectfully reinforcing your boundary isn’t unkind; it’s necessary for your well-being.
Recognise your patterns. Notice when you’re making things harder than they need to be. Ask yourself: “Is this actually difficult, or am I creating obstacles because success feels unfamiliar?” Sometimes we sabotage ease because struggle feels more comfortable.
Celebrate small wins. When something goes well without a fight, acknowledge it! Every time you choose self-compassion over criticism, every boundary you maintain, every moment you release the belief that value comes through struggle—these are victories worth honoring.
Remember, life is not about an eternal struggle. And you deserve success, love and support for free, without suffering.
